Dead from the neck up.

July 15 at Cleveland

Short Take:  And the bottom-half was pretty lifeless, too.

Inside
JERRY'S HEAD

The "first-class organization" Jerry Reinsdorf promised 22 seasons ago, took another lifeless steps towards oblivion, in another brain-dead performance that would leave even talentless chumps like Kevin Bell, Rusty Torres, and Bill Nahorodny hanging their heads in shame.  It was bargain-basement Sox ballplayers like these of the late-70's Sox that the Chairman was disparaging back in 1981.  Now 21 years later, it's come to this:  the Sox can't even compete in the weakest division in the American League.  All that has changed is the size of the payroll.

Jerry Reinsdorf, get the hell out!

They lost 7-1 at Cleveland, to some fool who collected his first-ever major league win.  The only mystery was how the Sox avoided the shutout.  Yes, they were THAT bad.  Ken Lofton hit a leadoff dinger in the eighth to prevent Sox Fans from the complete humiliation of being shutout by a team that has already waved the white flag on the season.  Don't look now, but those three-legged mongrels from Cleveland are only one game behind us in the loss column.

Gary Glover is in over his head by at least two notches.  An effective long-reliever, he's pressed into the rotation because the team is too cheap to do anything to repair the hole left by veteran Jim Parque's velocity problems.  He gave the Sox a good chance to win, pitching into the sixth.  An error by Jeff Liefer and some crap relief work by Bob Howry left Glover tagged with two extra runs on top of the two he allowed himself.  A Ray Durham error accounted for another unearned run in the second inning, too.

Should we mention the Sox stranded nine men on base, including two each with two out by Ray Durham and Jeff Liefer?  Outstanding job, gentlemen!

If you're looking for a bright spot, Frank Thomas went 2 for 3 with a walk in the #6 hole.

By all means, give the manager a vote of confidence.  The fish rots from the head down.  Manuel isn't even close to being the true source of this franchise's troubles.

85 years and waiting, Sox Fans.

Ken Lofton

Hit a dinger in the eighth to break up the shutout.  How the hell did this lifeless bunch ever score one?
