Pre-Game Report

If the first game of this doubleheader was an abomination, what can we Sox Fans possibly call the nightcap?  How does "funeral" sound?  The Sox sucked in the first game, and blew chunks in the second, and perhaps finally we can say without equivocation, the season is over.

No offense, and not nearly enough pitching, go hand-in-hand once again to another miserable defeat, 3-1 to Detroit.  The Sox get swept and the best news for Sox Fans is the whole lot of them might get sent home early this summer because of a strike.  Here's hoping the strike authorization vote is unanimous inside the Sox clubhouse.  Don't prolong the agony!

This was so typically another brain-dead performance by the Sox.  In fact, each of these losses are like matched bookends to the entire miserable season.

The Sox are facing another pathetic left-handed pitcher, so Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel feels compelled to roll out his special "Southpaw Wrecking Crew" lineup.  Just one problem:  the only wrecking this crew does is to the team's chances of winning.  Some joke named Mike Maroth held The Tinkerer's righty-strong lineup to five pathetic hits in seven full innings.

It goes without saying this lineup was yet another permutation of the 25 guys Manuel has on his bench.  This guy seems hell-bent on trying all 10 million or so possible combinations of players the roster permits.  Sox Fans, please don't wakeup the manager from his delusion by pointing out there are only 162 games in the schedule.

The slumping Frank Thomas was dropped to #6 for the first time since 1991.  He completed the day with another 0-fer performance.  The enigmatic Carlos Lee was stuck in the #3 hole.  His three hits represented exactly half of the Sox offensive production.  Magglio Ordonez got one hit.  Nobody beneath him, #5-#9, had a single hit all night.  That's 0 for 16 from Paul Konerko through Royce Clayton.  Absolutely pathetic.

Rocky Biddle was the spot starter, got tagged for a two-run dinger and was chased in the fifth.  The Sox trailed 2-0 till the eighth when Ordonez hit a double-play grounder, scoring a run from third.  Naturally the Sox bullpen gave the run right back in the bottom of the frame.  Oh Lord, how can they possibly suck anymore than this?

A leadoff walk in the ninth comes to nothing when the next three dutifully make outs.  This outfit will never stop sucking until somebody at the top gets serious about winning.

Don't bet on it.

Carlos Lee

3 for 3 at the plate, plus a walk, easily the most production the Sox have gotten from the #3 hole since April.  Never scored even once, which says a lot about how pathetic the Sox offense has become.
