Pre-Game Report

Was that the death rattle of the 2002 Sox season we just heard?  As long as Cleveland keeps stumbling, second-place seems assured.  Thus it's possible the Sox can hold out hope of climbing over .500 and wait for Minnesota to collapse in front of them.  Yes, and monkeys might fly out of my butt, too.

The Sox lose 6-5 to Detroit, blowing a three-run lead in the eighth.  They lose a home series to a ballclub that hasn't won a road series all season.  And of course they look pathetic doing it.  "

"Oh God of Corpseball, take thy humble servants, the 2002 Chicago White Sox!"

Let's pile up the lifeless Sox bodies like cord wood next to Hell's Hearth, shall we.

The Sox managed four hits across seven innings against a lousy knuckeballer with an ERA over 6.

Frank Thomas hasn't a clue at the plate anymore.  He managed one walk in five at-bats, an 0 for 4 performance from our #3 hitter.  Only now do the geniuses running the front office admit that The Big Hurt might need to visit Walt Hrniak to fix his swing.  What took them so long?  The answer is more Sox organizational stonewalling, of course.

From Frank Thomas through #9 Royce Clayton, the Sox managed one hit all night, an incredibly inept 1 for 22 performance by Thomas, Magglio Ordonez, Paul Konerko, Jose Valentin, Carlos Lee, and Clayton.

The one bright spot in the batting order was a clutch three-run dinger by catcher Sandy Alomar in the fourth inning.  How typical it was the last inning the Sox would score in this game.

The Sox get a quality start from young Dan Wright and effective relief work in the seventh and eighth innings from Damaso Marte.  Naturally Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel can't leave well enough alone.  Marte gets pulled.

Keith Foulke can't get anybody out, Kelly Wunsch lets the horse leave the barn, and Antonio Osuna kicks the game away.  Jerry Manuel scores the "hat trick" of choosing three consecutive lousy relievers after pulling the one that was effective.  The bullpen is a mess because Manuel manages it that way.

Stop worrying about Minnesota.  This team is running in quicksand, burying itself deeper with each passing game.

Sox Clubhouse "Pick to Click" Winner

Dan Wright

Six innings with just one earned run, four hits allowed.  Figured to be the winner until Keith Foulke blew up in the eighth.
