Pre-Game Report

Once upon a time, Danny Wright was serving softballs to the Chicago Cubs.  Once upon a time, the Cubs had a shutout and an eight-run lead.  Once upon a time, Cubbie fans were wetting their pants with excitement--not to be confused with their usual fear-filled response whenever visiting a "bad neighborhood".

Once upon a time, the Cubs weren't roadkill.  The Sox leave tracks over the Lovable Losers, 13-9.  Somebody call Animal Control for a pickup.  Pee-soaked Flubbie paraphernalia is littering the parking lots surrounding 35th & Shields.

Say what you will about our Sox, most Sox Fans are honest enough to know what our team's troubles are, and few if any of us are delusional enough to think they have the championship pedigree.  But when it comes to the Cubs, it just can't be repeated often enough:  that team just flat-out sucks!

Forget about Danny Wright.  Whatever he had in mind to do out there, he needs to review the game plan carefully, then burn it.  He couldn't even make it through the third inning.  Pathetic.

Enter Matt Ginter.  He ends the Flubbie rally with a strikeout, then settles in for the next three innings of hitless baseball.  Brilliant!  Only an eight-run deficit stood between the Sox and victory.  Against the Lovable Losers, no problem.

Was Ginter's performance the turning point of the game?  It has to compete with Paul Konerko's fourth inning at-bat.  Kerry Wood, the Flubbie pitcher formerly known as 'Savior', hit Konehead in the helmet.  As Chimp Caray might say, "That's makes a league-leading ten hit batsmen for you young Cubs fans watching at home to copy!"

The game turned.  Two batters later, Carlos Lee batted in Konerko and the Sox had their first run.  The comeback had started.

The Sox pounded "Morning" Wood for three more runs in the fifth.  Ka-boom!  The worst was yet to come for this loser, "Yesterday's Newspapers" Wood.   He was pulled in the sixth inning, but not before the Sox pounded him for another two runs, en route to a whopping six runs.

And which Sox hero was in the middle of all of this?  Paul Konerko and his welt, of course.  A two-run dinger in the fifth and another in the sixth were the key blows in each rally.  Sox take the lead, 10-8.

Damned, the Cubs suck!  They managed a measly run in the seventh to cut the lead to 10-9, so the Sox came back and pounded their bullpen for another three runs in the eighth.

For one shining moment, the 2002 Chicago White Sox flash a bit of championship pedigree.  Over 46,000 jam into Comiskey Park to see it.  Most of them were hoping for a bit more of it this season.
