Pre-Game Report

What will it take to beat the Minnesota Twins?  Our Sox are still searching for the answer after the host Twinkies did practically everything possible to kick the game away.  None of it made a difference in the end.  Sox lose 5-4.  They've lost four in a row, they drop to four games beneath .500, and fall seven games off Minnesota's pace in the A.L. Central.

Who, me worry?

Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel finally stopped tinkering.  He went with the lineup that was the hottest in all of baseball back in April.  Lofton in CF, Durham at 2b, Thomas the DH, Maggs in RF, Konerko at 1b, Valentin at 3b, Lee in LF, Johnson catching, and Clayton at SS.  Was that the topic of the pre-game meeting, no more tinkering?  Time will tell.

The karma seemed to work.  Jon Garland pitched effectively and the Sox bats got lucky.  Royce Clayton led off the second inning reaching base on an error.  He steals second and goes to third on Ken Lofton's grounder.  With one out, Ray Durham pops out, but the left fielder botches it, and Clayton scores. Later, Magglio Ordonez jolts one into the second row of seats and the Sox have a 3-0 lead, and nobody batted in a single one of them.

Twinkie manager Ron Gardenhire proved himself wound a bit too tight.  He argued Jacque Jones' error on Durham's popout, and then got tossed when pitching slug Matt Kinney through behind the head of Paul Konerko with the first pitch after Ordonez's dinger.

Didn't he look silly, Sox Fans?  The umpires were laughing about it after this game, that's for sure.

An upper-deck dinger by Jose Valentin to start the sixth inning extended the Sox lead to 4-1, but disaster was lurking around the corner.  A larger inning was wasted when Royce Clayton tried to come home from second base on an infield single by Ken Lofton.  That was out #3 with the top of the order coming up.

Look out below!

Jon Garland gave up a leadoff single, got the next two outs, but made a mistake pitch and the Twins got one run back.  In the seventh, Garland let the leadoff man on base again.  He came home when Garland made a mistake to Torii Hunter.  That tied the game.

We've been here before, Sox Fans.

The inevitable loss came in the eighth.  Reliever Bob Howry got two quick outs, but walked the third batter.  A wild-pitch and liner into the gap brought home Minnesota's go-ahead run.

1-2-3 go the Sox in the ninth.  Nobody expects to receive half as many gifts from the Twins tomorrow.

Jose Valentin

2 for 4 with a dinger, a sensational play at third base to save a run, and managed not to run the Sox out of rally, too.
