Pre-Game Report

Three games under .500.  While Sox Fans still look hopefully towards those 19 remaining games with first-place Minnesota, the immediate goal can't be winning the division.  The way our team is playing now, getting over .500 appears a steep hill to climb.  The Twins come next, and we don't need to be reminded what they did to us just one year ago.

The Sox are swept in the ugliest of fashions, 9-1 in Atlanta.  The team fell behind early and quit.  You can't look at it any other way.  Nothing went right today, and nobody played well.

Danny Wright was bombed from the very start.  If you can believe it, his first pitch, a ball, was as close as the Sox would come to winning this game.  The next one Atlanta planted beyond the left field wall.  1-0 Braves.  They never looked back.  Three more hits led to three more runs.  It was 4-0 before the Sox got back to the dugout.  An error by thirdbasemen Jose Valentin, the first of two errors, didn't cost the team.  He wouldn't be so lucky two innings later.

The Sox didn't manage their first hit until the fourth inning.  By then Valentin had committed his second error, and the Sox were trailing 6-0.

In spite of only collecting five hits, the Sox still managed to strand nine baserunners.  It's practically beyond comprehension how they consistently do this.  Nobody can get a clutch hit.  In the fourth, two runners were stranded in scoring position when Carlos Lee flied out and Royce Clayton grounded out.

Ken Lofton was stranded at first base in the fifth (Willie Harris flied out).  Clayton walked in the seventh but was stranded there when Mark Johnson, Jeff Liefer, and Lofton failed to deliver.  Magglio Ordonez hits a one out triple in the eighth, but Paul Konerko and Valentin can't get him home.

A leadoff single by Lee in the ninth, and a walk by Tony Graffanino, comes to nothing.  Clayton lined out, pinch hitter Frank Thomas struck out, and Lofton ended the game with a grounder.

Rocky Biddle was pounded in the eighth, three hits, two of them homers, for another three runs.  It was a real team effort to lose this game.

Meanwhile Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel rolls out another new lineup.  Nothing has worked, but that hasn't stopped him from trying something new every time out.  Should he be committed for psychological evaluation?  This is insanity.

The team is dead, and now they face the most critical series of the season.  It's depressing to consider what awaits we Sox Fans in the Hump Dome.

Hit a solo shot dinger.  The only thing between the Sox and an embarrassing shutout in a series sweep.
