JERRY'S HEAD

Another golden opportunity to make up ground in the standings goes by the boards for our White Sox.  An anemic lineup by Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel does exactly what everyone expected it to.  Everyone except the Tinkerer, of course.  He let lefty Tom Glavine dictate who played this game.  Not a clutch hit to be found and the Sox go down 3-2 to Atlanta.

Yeah, but haven't the Sox always won with pitching and defense.  When was that?  1917?

Todd Ritchie made only one mistake of any consequence.  Nursing a 1-0 lead, Ritchie walked one batter, then watched his 1-1 pitch to the next hitter sail over the right field wall.  Just like that, the Sox are losing 2-1 and Todd Ritchie has only allowed one hit.

Just enough to lose, eh Sox Fans?

With no Sox "O", Ritchie was being fitted for his ninth loss of the season.  The Sox stranded eight runners on base.  Josh Paul's two-out rbi was as close to clutch as the Sox got.  Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee, and Ray Durham were a combined 0 for 11 with three strikeouts.  Maggs grounded into a double-play, too.

Still the Sox managed to get an eighth inning rally going.  A leadoff double by Ken Lofton (of course) got things started.  One out later, Frank Thomas singled home Lofton with the tying run.  That's all the Sox would get in this inning, stranding another runner at third base.

How does Ritchie respond to this bit of good luck?  He starts the bottom of the inning with a walk.  A sacrifice and a single sends the go-ahead run to third base.  Jerry the Tinkerer goes to the bullpen, and Damaso Marte allows a bunt single and just like that, the Sox are losing again.  Here comes loss #9, Mr. Ritchie.

The Tinkerer saw fit to pinch hit lefty Jose Valentin to start the ninth.  He singles, but unlike the Braves, the Sox can't get him home.  A sacrifice and two strikeouts left him sitting at second base.

Pitching and defense might win games in October, but the 2002 White Sox don't have to worry about that, do they?

Todd Ritchie

Pitched a two-hitter into the eighth inning.  Stood to be the loser anyway, caught a break when the Sox scored in the eighth, then promptly kicked the game away.  This is called "hard luck".
