JERRY'S HEAD

How long could the Chicago White Sox keep themselves from figuring out a way to accept all the gifts the Philadelphia Phillies were offering their guests?  This was the Sox first-ever trip to the city of brotherly love.  Couldn't they show more manners to their hosts?

Not this bunch.  Sox win 6-3 in twelve innings.  Nothing comes easy these days for our Pale Hose.

Remarkably, this was the first time the Sox played an extra innings game this season.  Unremarkably, the Sox blew multiple chances to salt this game away in a regulation nine.  Should we mention Danny Wright gave the team six innings work and allowed three earned runs.  For the effort he stood to be the loser.  Is anyone surprised?

Two solo dingers in the sixth inning figured to be Wright's downfall.  The Sox trailed 3-1, and Lord knows Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel's lineup for this game was anything but an offensive juggernaut.

Paul Konerko joined on the bench oowie Ken Lofton and Jose Valentin.  Streaky Ray Durham was leading off while slumping Frank Thomas anchored the middle of the order.  The bottom of the lineup featured Aaron Rowand, Royce Clayton, and Josh Paul.  That doesn't even count the pitcher's at-bats.  Manuel even used one of them (Todd Ritchie) as a pinch-hitter.  Funny thing is, Ritchie's .178 average isn't much worse than the production were currently getting from our #9 hitter with the DH.

No wonder Wright stood to be the loser for allowing three runs!

The Sox were handed a gift-wrapped thirteen base on balls!  Not until the ninth inning did any of them score.  Pathetic.

Even while scoring in the rarest of feats, a ninth inning rally, the Sox squandered what the Phillies were handing them.  The first two men reached base, and a sacrifice advanced them both to scoring position with one out.  For this, the Sox got one measly run.

The bullpen patiently held the hapless Phillies scoreless across six innings while the White Sox hitters figured out how to get a clutch hit.  It finally came in the twelfth when Ken Lofton (naturally) hit a clutch triple, scoring Carlos Lee and Jose Valentin, who had both walked.  With a three-run lead, Antonio Osuna and Rocky Biddle finished off the Phils.

A 4 hour 16 minute game finally ended, not counting the 71 minute rain delay.  With such ineptitude, it's a miracle they aren't still playing.
