Pre-Game Report

How can you tell the Sox Fans from the Cubs fans at Wrigley Field this weekend?

The Sox Fans are the ones wearing bags over their heads.

Or at least they should be for supporting a team that literally up and quits.  The fading shadow of an offensive juggernaut that dominated the league for the first month of the season has officially disappeared completely from view.  This is a Sox team that can't hit its way out of a paper bag, and nobody--and I mean NOBODY--has a clue what to do about it.

Argue whether this anemic group is the real Sox, or whether the avengers of April were the real Sox.  There is one point nobody can debate, least of all Kenny Williams and Jerry Reinsdorf:  this is the Sox team we can afford.

When you jump up and down, screaming and shouting for blood, please remember what you were told--repeatedly--all winter long.  This is YOUR fault.

Have a nice day, Sox Fans.

Sox lose 7-3 to the pathetic Chicago Cubs.  They try to avoid a sweep Sunday with head case Todd "Veteran Presence" Ritchie on the bump.  If you're a Sox Fan attending this game, please know the Chairman will not be issuing you combat pay, though clearly you will have earned it.  You've been warned.

Mark Buehrle didn't have it working.  He dueled Jon Lieber for four scoreless innings, then became the beneficiary of a two run lead the anemic Sox offense managed on his behalf.  A two-out rbi double by Jose Valentin scored two runs.  The Sox might have made more of this rally when Magglio Ordonez followed with a walk, but Paul Konerko struck out to end the inning with two runners stranded.  We must lead the league for runners left on base.

Buehrle promptly blew the lead handed him.  The Flubs strung together three singles and a walk to tie the game 2-2 in the very next half-inning.  Catcher Mark Johnson (batting seventh in Jerry Manuel's designed-to-lose lineup) hit a dinger out of the park to spot Buehrle the lead again in the sixth inning.  Would this be enough?

Not a chance.  Buehrle was beaten silly in the bottom of the frame.  The Flubbies batted around on the Sox' best pitcher, scoring four runs on five hits, plus a Paul Konerko fielding error.  The anemic Sox were down four runs.  Game over.

1-2-3 went the Sox in the seventh and eighth.  Those two innings weren't half as painful as watching pinch hitter Frank Thomas look at strike three on an 0-2 count, or Jeff Liefer ground into a double-play to end the game.

Keep it up and those 19 games we have left with Minnesota won't mean a damned thing.

Jose Valentin

The only Sox player with a hit who didn't strikeout, too.  Two rbi's on a two-out double.  Nobody left on base.  Turned a double-play, too, playing third base (again).
