Pre-Game Report

This is the game we Sox Fans have been searching for for weeks.  Here's the game the Sox score a run late to pull out a victory.  An eighth inning rbi single by Tony Graffanino lifts the Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Mets.  The Sox win the series--another feat too rare of late.

As for the other game Sox Fans have been waiting for, we can counsel patience waiting for the Sox to come from behind late to win.  That one is still out in the bush somewhere.  Let's be happy with what we got.

As is the case in most games the Sox win, it was scoring first that was the harbinger of Sox victory.  Tony Graffanino got another start, this time at third base by Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel.  Manuel saw fit to leave his part of his house of cards unchanged with Graffanino getting another start hitting in the #2 hole.  There are some things even the Tinkerer isn't foolish enough to mess with.

So it was Graffanino batting in the first inning after Kenny Lofton grounded out and yesterday's hero Frank Thomas in the on-deck circle.  The Sox utilityman calmly took a 2-1 pitch from New York's Al Lieter over the wall and the Sox had themselves a 1-0 lead.

For a change, such a simple accomplishment by the anemic Sox offense might be enough to hold up for victory.  With Jerry the Tinkerer putting together yet another bottom-three of  Ray Durham, Sandy Alomar, and Royce "Benched for the Long-Term" Clayton, the Sox didn't figure to score too many runs.  Not surprisingly, they didn't.

Less unexpected was another fine pitching performance by one of the young arms promoted to the Sox rotation.  Sox Fans know we're getting more mileage from these guys than we could reasonably expect when the season began.  Danny Wright is the latest one to pitch well enough to win.  Unfortunately for him, as most of the others of late, there was no "W" for the effort.

Oh, well.  Danny will be satisfied with a three-hitter, pitching into the eighth inning.  He made one mistake, a line shot dinger off the bat of Mike Piazza in the seventh.  That was enough for the Mets to tie the game.  Jerry the Tinkerer's lineup had been fast asleep since Graffanino's dinger.  Frank Thomas, Magglio Ordonez, and Paul Konerko were a combined 1 for 10 with five strikeouts.  Lord only knows what the Tinkerer has in mind to "fix" this problem.

So it was the most noteworthy bit of offense the entire night that occurred in the eighth inning.  With one out, Royce Clayton walked, then advanced to third on Aaron Rowand's double.  That brought Tony "The Improbable Killer" to the plate again.  On the critical 2-2 pitch, Graf gets one into right field, scoring Clayton.  A late-inning run to break the tie!  Who wudda thunk it?

The new Sox closer Antonio Osuna got the Mets 1-2-3 in the ninth and the Sox cart off the win, Osuna with his second save in as many nights.

Next for our Pale Hose, a trip to the weed and urine factory.
