Pre-Game Report

Inside
JERRY'S HEAD

Who says our White Sox are contraction candidates?  After two pathetic defeats at home to Montreal, Sox Fans might be forgiven for secretly hoping their team was the one on the chopping block, thus saving a lifetime's worth of bitterness, betrayal, and defeat.  Ah, but Sunday the Sox won, and once again all is right in the world.  God Bless our Sox, victors 13-2 over the Expos.  They salvage the final of the three-game series.

With ace Mark Buehrle on the hill, it was anybody's guess which Sox team would show up for work.  The team has a horrific record on Sundays for reasons Ken Williams and Jerry Manuel admit to being clueless to understanding.  One thing for certain:  the Sox weren't staying up late Saturday night celebrating a victory!

So it was most reassuring to the stomach linings of Sox Fans everywhere when the anemic offense, formerly known as the Mighty Sox "O",  tore into Montreal pitching from the very start.

Four runs on hour hits staked Mark Buehrle and the Sox to a lead they would never relinquish.   Okay, two of the runs scored on a Montreal error, but who's counting?  The way we've been playing, it's about time the Sox caught a break.

Stomach acid started to build in the very next inning.  Buehrle looked to blow the lead handed him, allowing three consecutive hits leading to two Expos runs.  Just like that, the Sox lead was cut in half.  With seven innings left to play, would they be able to hold on?  Fretful Sox Fans dreaded the answer.

"No problem," answers Buehrle.  He settled down, scattered three hits over the next five innings, and nailed down his ninth victory for the effort.  The lefty's ERA is down to 2.80.

"No problem," answered the Sox offense, too.  The Sox collected three more runs in the fourth, and five runs in the fifth.  Magglio Ordonez was a one-man wrecking crew, collecting three hits and six rbi's.  Tony Graffanino had a fine day, too, filling in for Ray Durham at second base and batting second.  He went 2 for 3 with two walk, two runs scored, and two rbi's.  Not bad for a utilityman!

Even the black hole that used to be the bottom-third of the Sox lineup perked up.  Mark Johnson and Royce Clayton (starting at shortstop) each collected two hits and a walk while Carlos "Just Happy to Be in the Lineup"  Lee had one hit and a walk.

Another going-away victory for the Sox.  They still haven't shaken the season-long bugaboo losing close games, but right about now, any victory to add to the win column is greatly appreciated.
