Pre-Game Report

We wish we could say things couldn't possibly get worse, but being Sox Fans, why are we so sure the worst is yet to come?  Our Sox sleepwalk through yet another game and lose in pathetic fashion.  Sleepy pitching, comatose baserunning, and not a clutch hit all day long, Sox lose to Kansas City 4-3.

Darrell May is the newest member of the "I can't pitch but I can beat the Sox" club.  He got his first major league win in five years with Thursday's victory.  Ex-Sox Roberto Hernandez got his tenth save in eleven attempts against his old mates.  The only reason we mention this is because losing to these people is such a routine occurrence, Sox Fans can practically set their watch to it.

Other ulcer-inducing events are becoming all too common, too.  Sox baserunning gaffes have become standard faire.  Today's blue-plate special came in the fourth inning.  Sandy Alomar was the leadoff man, thrown out at third base trying to stretch a double.  Why would he lead off an inning trying to get to third base?  Little League coaches across America are grinding their teeth searching for an answer.

How about a pinch hitter who fails to take the bat off his shoulder?  Jeff Liefer takes three straight balls, then stands by and takes three straight strikes.  Meanwhile the tying run, Tony Graffanino, was left stranded at second base.  That's how the eighth inning two-run rally ended.

The Sox stranded two more runs in the ninth inning, and in fact managed to strand ten men on base while only collecting nine hits.  The Royals were begging to get beat!  May issued five base on balls!!!

So what was the critical mistake?  How did the anemic Royals score one more run than our anemic Sox?  Simple. Our pitcher, Todd "Veteran Presence" Ritchie fell asleep with a man on base.

It came in the fifth.  Ritchie gave up a leadoff double.  With Sox killer Joe Randa at bat, Ritchie completely ignored the baserunner, Sweeney, who casually stole third base.  Don't blame catcher Sandy Alomar; the lead Sweeney got off Ritchie was unbelievable.  Randa's sacrifice fly brought home KC's fifth run--the eventual winning run.

Alomar is a good teammate.  He tried to deflect blame from Ritchie for the gaffe, suggesting the infielders are responsible for helping hold the baserunner close, too.  Of course we know bad defense couldn't be to blame because no error was issued--and we had our best defensive shortstop and secondbasemen playing together on that play.

Would this be a bad time to remind Sox Fans this was Todd Ritchie's sixth-straight defeat, eight total for the year?  The three arms we sent to Pittsburgh for his veteran presence have won sixteen games between them.

Montreal comes to town.  They have a bunch of pitchers we've never seen, too.

Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

Two shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit, two strikeouts, and no walks.  Stood to be the winner--if anybody could get a clutch hit.
