Pre-Game Report

The most noteworthy bit of news from the Sox' seventh defeat in a row didn't even make the box score:  Jerry Manuel got kicked out.  Arguing balls and strikes, Manuel and third base coach Wallace Johnson each  were tossed from the game.  How would the Sox fare without their leadership?  They nearly came back in the late innings for like only the second time this entire season, still losers 4-3.  Cleveland sweeps and now pulls into a tie for second-place in the mighty A.L. Central Division.

Oh, and the Sox are back at .500.  This will happen when you can't score runs, even as your young pitching staff gives you more effort than you ever had a right to expect.  Perhaps the solution is more defense?

At times like these, do any of us really know what goes through the minds of deep thinkers Jerry Manuel and Kenny Williams?  Be sure the exact opposite solution they propose will work at least as well.

Danny Wright was the victim Sunday.  He wasn't dominant, but left the game in the seventh down 2-0.  Damaso Marte served a gopher pitch and suddenly it was 4-0.  Mr. Wright, say hello to your sixth loss.

Whatever motivational trick Manuel might have hoped to achieve by getting tossed clearly didn't work.  The Sox spent the afternoon doing what has become expected, striking out, and leaving men on base.

The Sox got nine hits off pitching slug Chuck Finley, but let him off the hook with hardly a sweat.  Royce Clayton struck out twice, most infamously to end the second inning to the bases loaded.  Seven Sox runners were stranded in scoring position, thanks to Clayton (2), Paul Konerko (2), Frank Thomas (1), and Tony Graffanino (1).  Great job, guys!.

It wasn't until the eighth inning that the Sox showed any sign of life.  Sandy Alomar started things with a leadoff double.  Whoever was calling the shots in the Sox dugout next made the obvious move that has escaped Manuel all season:  pinch hitting for Clayton late in games the Sox are losing.  Pinch hitter Jose Valentin took a 3-2 pitch for ball four and suddenly the Sox had themselves an honest-to-God late-inning rally!  Woo hoo!

From this the Sox managed just one run.  They had another golden opportunity in the ninth, when Carlos Lee led off with a single and Sandy Alomar advanced him to third with a single of his own.  Two more runs would score to make it 4-3, but with the tying run at second base, Frank Thomas's line shot was stabbed at second base--ending the game.

The Twins lost.  Somebody is going to win this division--if anyone cares to.
