Pre-Game Report

Much has been made about how the Sox never make a move to win a close ballgame.  Either we crush the opponent by a large margin, or we sit by and lose big.  After watching the offense sputter and choke, then have the bullpen blow two consecutive wins, the question now becomes, "Would you rather lose easy or lose hard?"

Keith Foulke blows up in the ninth inning, and the Sox lose hard, 6-3 the final.  Yeah, the Yankees get the sweep.  The way we're playing, they would likely sweep us in a ten game series.  Thank God we only played them three times!

The inept moves down the stretch by Jerry Manuel again leave Sox Fans guessing what their manager could be thinking.  Keith Foulke was brought in for a two inning relief appearance?  Damaso Marte was in the bullpen.  Sure, he failed to punch out Robin Ventura yesterday, but the third strike was right there to be called.  The umpire simply wouldn't punch out the Yankee.  Was Manuel blaming Marte for the umpire blowing the call?

Five runs on four hits, plus a walk to Jeter.  This was a ninth inning disaster to rival the one in Minneapolis last June, or the one in Seattle last April.   Let's hope Marte and Foulke have short memories.  Otherwise, they have two full days to sit and contemplate how their manager just publicly questioned their ability to get the job done.

No pinch hitters from Manuel down the stretch.  Mark Johnson (.212 batting average) and Royce Clayton (.201 batting average) each got to take cuts in the bottom of the ninth.  Carlos Lee and Sandy Alomar were on the bench and available to Manuel.

The victim for all of this was Mark Buehrle.  In the best pitching match up of the season, Buehrle out-dueled Cy Young winner Roger Clemens, allowing just one run through seven innings.  Leaving with a 3-1 lead, Buehrle was in line for his league-leading ninth victory, but the Yankees' ninth inning comeback put an end to that.

Texas did the Sox a huge favor, beating the Twins.  The Sox head for Cleveland just one game off the pace and the Yankees just a bad memory.  If we were in any other division, a Sox Fan might have reason to really fret.

Not that we aren't fretting already.  Can you blame us?
