Fulmer Out-Klubers Kluber

September 30th vs. the Cleveland Indians

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Blues Brothers
We're on a mission from Hahn.

Short Take: Carson Fulmer overcame a blistered pitching hand to hold the Indians to one run as the Sox beat the defending AL champs 2-1 in Cleveland.

Though it's autumn, I'm reminded of June graduations. Seniors move on to new places and new careers, while the 8th-grade class moves into high school. The younger class leaves behind middle-school awkwardness hoping to become the cool kids and replace the seniors who've departed. It's the story of spring: old growth makes way for new growth.

Let's mix metaphors even further: 2017 has been one long springtime for the White Sox. Old growth like Chris Sale, Adam Eaton, Todd Frazier, David Robertson, Jose Quintana, and Melky Cabrera moved aside. New growth like Yoan Moncada, Matt Davidson, Lucas Giolito, and Tim Anderson are planted firmly, while Michael Kopech, Eloy Jiminez, Alec Hansen, and Luis Robert are new shoots sprouting brightly alongside the strong young plants.

Tonight the new-growth White Sox beat the old-growth Cleveland Indians 2-1 in a tightly-pitched affair. Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber was outpitched by blister-fingered young'un Carson Fulmer. Interesting for Fulmer, who's expected to see a career in the bullpen. But tonight, after coming off a blister injury, he threw five innings of one-run ball that kept the Sox in the game. A nice performance all around. And the bullpen carried it for the remaining four innings without damage -- that's saying something, since the bullpen has been the South Side's soft spot all year.

Both Sox RBIs went to Kevan Smith, who singled-in Jose Abreu in the fourth, then doubled-in Avi Garcia in the sixth. Juan Minaya picked up his ninth save to nail down the win. A satisfying evening all around.

One game remains in the 2017 championship season, and so many changes have been made this year that I find myself stumbling through metaphors trying to describe it. We all know that we're seeing a rebuild, a reset, a teardown, an overhaul, a retreat -- heck, choose the term that best suits your mood. The fact remains that even if the Sox had kept Sale, Eaton, Quintana, and the rest, they weren't going to have enough to get past the Indians or even the Twins. I have to give my own Savvy-GM-Of-The-Year Award to Rick Hahn. It took nerve to make those moves, and it took a riverboat gambler's patience and poker face to get the young talent the Sox now have.

I've already got my SoxFest reservations in place. I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to next year, and I haven't been able to say that for a long time.

Moving out of 8th grade was a big deal. Moving out of the shadow of more successful teams will be an even bigger deal. The band Timbuk3 said it best:

Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Fandamonium:
Elwood: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.
Jake: Hit it.
