WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Menaced by Manny

May 21 vs. Baltimore

WSI Playdate Funtime:

The house wobbled until it finally collapsed.

Short Take: Orioles shortstop Manny Machado gets attention both before and during White Sox loss.

For every rumor that Manny Machado will sign with the White Sox in free agency, there are about 10 that the Flubs will trade for him before this season's deadline, thus completing another storybook season on the North Side. So before Monday's game at Guaranteed Rate Field, Machado met with throngs of media and was even greeted by a pair of Flubs fans in the stands with a "Chicago Wants Machado" sign. Hopefully for our sake, Machado doesn't even sniff Clark and Addison ever. In the meantime, he remains a Baltimore Oriole and was a key figure in a 3-2 Sox defeat.

Hector Santiago and Andrew Cashner engaged in an unlikely pitching duel, putting up zeros in each of the first three innings. That changed in the fourth when Machado showed he's worth the hype by crushing a home run to left. Mark Trumbo followed suit with his own dinger to center the next inning. Trumbo later earned his first career ejection for arguing a check swing.

The bottom of the fifth was rough. Adam Engel hit a single with one out and was thrown out by a mile trying to stretch it into a double. Yoan Moncada and Yolmer Sanchez both reach base for Jose Abreu, who doubled to score Moncada. Sanchez tried to tie the score on the same play, but an Orioles relay got him at home.

After Adam Jones homered in the top of the sixth, the bottom started hopeful as Daniel Palka led off with a ground-rule double, Matt Davidson singled, and Leury Garcia also had a ground-rule double to score one run and send Cashner to the showers. But despite having runners in scoring position with nobody out, the rest of the inning went to Hell. Mychal Givens induced a pop-out from Welington Castillo, who didn't run to first on the play and promptly earned a benching from Rick Renteria. Givens then struck out Tim Anderson and Engel to end the threat.

Luis Avilan, Bruce Rondon and Joakim Soria shut down the Orioles in order over the final three innings, so the Sox had one final chance against O's closer Brad Brach. With one out, Engel drew a walk, and Moncada singled to move Engel to third. Sanchez failed to execute a safety squeeze and proceeded to strike out. After Abreu was intentionally walked, Trayce Thompson, who was inserted for Palka in right field at the top of the inning, went down on strikes to end a frustrating evening.

Games like this are especially irritating because a lot of the mistakes made could have been avoided with smarter baseball. The decision-making was questionable in a lot of areas, and it's worth wondering where the players are mentally. Though the Sox just took three of four from Texas, the season has been filled with episodes that drive us mad because players aren't hustling, and the staff appears to have trouble reaching several of those players. All of this is costing them games, and if this young team is ever going to develop, the aforementioned problems need to go away sooner rather than later.

The Sox continue their series with the Orioles on Tuesday. James Shields will get the ball against Kevin Gausman at 7:10. Meanwhile, the Machado hype trail likely will continue rolling. Yep, people on both sides of town are watching this series, and there's nothing any of us can do about it.

Fun Da Mentalz:
This team remains on very shaky ground.
