Duffy's Too Toughie

July 14 vs. the Kansas City Royals

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Escape from Atlantis
As we scrambled to save ourselves from the sinking of Hahn's Forbidden City, not everyone made it out by scoring runs.

Short Take: The Royals shut out the Sox 5-0 as the South Side offense was definitely counteroffensive.

Jean Shepherd, the writer and raconteur who created "A Christmas Story," grew up a White Sox fan in Hammond, Indiana. Much of the time on his New York radio show was spent doing hour-long monologues, telling stories often reflecting his keen interest in baseball. Specifically, bad baseball, as was played by the White Sox of his youth in the 1930s and 1940s. The St. Louis Browns were in business back then, and they too engaged in bad baseball. Shepherd once referred to a game between the White Sox and the Browns as a ballet of disaster.

Shepherd's apt metaphor occurred to me this afternoon as I observed the Kansas City Royals shut out the White Sox 5-0 on a cloudy afternoon at 35th Street. The Royals are bad; so bad that they are five games further behind the White Sox in the AL Central. To paraphrase another of Jean Shepherd's analogies, they are sister teams of defeat. How then, can the Sox be shut out by this wandering troupe?

One possible answer is that they were humbled by KC starter Danny Duffy, whose 5-8 record and 4.59 ERA is clearly enough to cause major-league hitters to turn into pillars of salt. Feckless hitters who scatter six hits, leave 16 runners on base, and strike out eight times add up to zero runs scored. Something about Duffy's fastball seemed to mystify the Sox batsmen.

Meanwhile, Reynaldo Lopez handed the cowtowners a hasty 2-0 lead before the first out was recorded. Whit Merrifield led off with a single and Jorge Bonafacio homered, all within the first half-dozen pitches of the game. Lopez gave up a third run in the fifth via a leadoff single, a balk, and a triple. Two more came home on Salvadore Perez's home run in the eighth to cement the score at 5-0.

Not much else to say about this exercise, except for two events: Rick Renteria was ejected in the fifth for pointing out the umpires' poor judgment on a checked-swing, non-strike call, and Yoan Moncada came out of the game after taking a throw on his kneecap. The word is that Moncada is day-to-day with a bruised knee. Which day to which day we don't know. "A scar nobly got is a good livery of honor," Shakespeare once wrote. If that be true, the White Sox organization is the most honorable livery in professional sports.

Your humble TBGR correspondent also attended Friday night's match between these two clubs and saw a rare Sox victory. When the Sox took a 7-2 lead into the seventh inning, all seemed well. That is, until (cue ominous music) the bullpen showed up. By the middle of the eighth is was 7-6 and looking scary. Two more South Side scores in the bottom of the eighth provided breathing room and our heroes won 9-6, but come on! Both Friday's and Saturday's games were comedies of manners: "After you!" "No, please, after you." "No, I insist. You win this game."

Jean Shepherd was talking about the White Sox and Browns of 80 years ago, but if he were here now he could just as easily be talking about the White Sox and Royals of 2018.
