Sox Project Update:
Cleaning up the mess
One guy almost blows all the progress, but his co-workers save him from that burden.

Short Take:   David Robertson blows another ninth-inning lead, but this time, the offense gets a chance to bail him out and does.

If you're David Robertson, you might just want to go to sleep now and forget about the past 24 hours. A gut-wrenching loss Tuesday to the Toronto Blue Jays at his hands was bad. He was almost equally charitable Wednesday. Luckily, the offense gave him a chance to recover and he was able to do so in a 5-3 White Sox win in 10 innings.

With eight hits surrendered, Jeff Samardzija wasn't overpowering, but he allowed no earned runs over seven innings of work. He walked only one batter and his only run allowed came on a sacrifice fly during his last frame. It would sure be nice if the Sox showed us whether they're contending or not soon so we know what should be done with him.

Samardzija seemingly got all the support he needed every third inning. Jose Abreu's double in the third brought home Carlos Sanchez and Adam Eaton, both of whom had reached on singles. Adam LaRoche singled to lead off the sixth, advanced to second on Alexei Ramirez's groundout and came home on a J.B. Shuck single. That should have been enough.

That 3-1 lead through seven-and-a-half innings wouldn't last though. Zach Putnam and Jake Petricka combined to give up a run in the eighth. Nursing a one-run lead, Robertson came on for the ninth, looking for redemption. Instead, Josh Donaldson, who had burned him with the walk-off home run the previous night, took him deep again to tie it up.

To prove this wouldn't be deja vu all over again, Robertson got the game to the 10th. Abreu led off with a triple (yes, a triple) and LaRoche singled him in shortly after. Emilio Bonifacio, pinch-running for LaRoche, scored on Gordon Beckham's double to give Robertson some breathing room for the bottom half. Despite putting runners on first and second with one out, Robertson finished off the Blue Jays for his fourth win of the season.

On this crucial road trip, these things will happen. Up and down and up again seems to especially be prominent with a streaky club like this. Robertson will blow saves, the offense will be mysterious for each game and our hearts might not be able to take it. Ah, the life of a baseball fan.

The White Sox will make up the two games with the Baltimore Orioles that were wiped out last month on Thursday. Chris Sale starts the first game and Chris Beck will make his Major League debut in the second. With luck, it won't be worse than the game with no crowd in which the Sox played poorly. Of course, the best-case scenario would be to improve to 3-2 during this stretch.
