Clutch Sale

June 26 vs Toronto Blue Jays

Toon Squad Update:
Clutch Cargo
Sale's square-jawed determination is clutch

Short Take: Sale continues to dominate all opposition, foreign or domestic.

Whenever Chris Sale takes the mound, Sox fans expect good things to happen. With the exception of a couple late inning hiccups, Sale did make good things happen today. The White Sox defeated the Blue Jays 5-2, and won the season series 5 games to 1.

Sale got some early help from the steady arm of right fielder Adam Eaton. Josh Donaldson's first inning shot to right bounced off the outfield wall. Against most right fielders, this is a double. But Eaton fired a strike just ahead of Donaldson into second base to gun him down.

The Sox had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the 2nd that went by the boards due to another missed umpire's call. Melky Cabrera and Todd Frazier opened the inning with singles. Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman threw a wild pitch that was quickly retrieved by the catcher. Russell Martin fired a strike to Donaldson as Melky slid into third. Donaldson pushed Cabrera's leg with his own leg, and tagged Melky with his foot off the bag. Appeals by Robin Ventura to Sox nemesis Angel Hernandez went unheeded, and the illegal putout stood. After a walk to Alex Avila, Brett Lawrie killed the inning with a double play grounder.

The Sox got their just desserts in the 3rd inning. Tyler Saladino walked and moved to second on a bad pickoff throw. Tim Anderson's grounder was perfectly placed, and he beat the throw for an infield hit as Saladino took third. Eaton bunted to the pitcher, who threw home but off target to the first base side. Saladino evaded the tag and scored the first Sox run. With two outs, a timely Cabrera single plated Anderson, and the Sox led 2-0.

Two more runs came across in the Sox 5th inning. Tim Anderson homered for the second straight day. Eaton walked, and reached third on Cabrera's third single of the game. Stroman then uncorked another wild pitch, Eaton scored, and the Sox led 4-0.

The Blue Jays finally scored on Sale in the top of the 8th. Troy Tulowitzki homered with one out, and Junior Lake hit his second career homer with two out. Sale finished the inning, but was done for the game. In the bottom of the 8th, JB Shuck homered in his second straight game, and turned a three run lead over to David Robertson. The Sox closer finished the game with no drama on three flyouts.

The Sox take a day off on Monday as the Twins come to town on Tuesday. Sox hard luck pitcher Jose Quintana goes against Kyle Gibson at 7:10 pm on Comcast Sports Net Plus.
