More Royal Than Kansas City

April 24 vs. Kansas City

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Everything was so sweet, no one could dislike any of it.

Short Take:   Miguel Gonzalez dominates again and the offense does more than its part in a blowout win over the Royals.

Ever go to a baseball game that had rather cool air, but on-field action hot enough to make up for it? I can now vouch for that. While Monday's game against the Kansas City Royals wasn't freezing, it felt more like a high school football game in October than the middle of summer. It didn't matter what the weather was because the White Sox dominated in a 12-1 shellacking.

Miguel Gonzalez, fresh off a dominating performance at Yankee Stadium last week, took to the mound looking for more. After he retired six of the first seven hitters, Matt Davidson gave him some early run support with a solo homer off Jason Vargas in the second inning. He lost it when he came back out thanks to Todd Frazier's two-out error and Mike Moustakas' subsequent game-tying double. Fear not because it was one of just two Royals hits on the night.

Gonzalez's final out of the third became the first of 12 straight. He never allowed the Royals to get any rhythm going on a night he gave up zero earned runs. Over eight innings and 105 pitches, he looked just like a veteran who knows exactly how to pitch in the the bigs to the point where it's all routine. There was no need to bring him out for the ninth, which was covered by Anthony Swarzak retiring the side in order.

Oh yes, I suppose I should talk about how Gonzalez's win became possible. Tim Anderson started the bottom of the third by reaching second on a Moustakas throw from third that ended up in the stands. Anderson stole third and came home on a base hit from Jose Abreu. Later, Leury Garcia and Anderson led off the fifth with back-to-back singles, scoring on a base hit by Melky Cabrera.

Peter Moylan relieved Vargas in the sixth, which really opened the floodgates. Five of the six batters he faced collected base hits in an outing that included an RBI double from Davidson and a 2-RBI triple by Tyler Saladino. Former Cubs pitcher Travis Wood came in to walk Cabrera and Abreu before serving up a 2-RBI double to Frazier. Davidson rounded out the eight-run frame with his second RBI hit of the inning: a line drive straight to the left field wall that scored Abreu and Frazier.

Whew, that's a lot of offense to cover, but it's a good problem to have when you're writing this. Another fine outing from Gonzalez and a night in which the offense had everything going makes for an enjoyable experience. For all we know, this game is as good as it gets as far as overall performance for this season. But on a future night that might cause these players to question what they're capable of, they just need to look at the video of this game.

Hopefully, the offense saved runs for Game 2 of this series Tuesday. Dylan Covey will get the ball against Danny Duffy starting at 7:10. The rookie could take a few pointers from members of a rotation that has done its job admirably in this young season. And if they can help him, there will be no one left for any team to look forward to facing.

Why can't every game be like this? The fun at the ballpark would never stop.

Miguel Gonzalez

Would have made it tough for the Royals to win even without all that run support.
