August 25 vs. Seattle Mariners

Toon Squad Update:
Mr. Incredible
Despite 3 Ks to start, Todd Frazier dons his cape and saves the day

Short Take:  Todd Frazier plays today's hero, providing both tying and walk-off hits against the solid Seattle Mariners; Sox win 7-6.

With the Sox struggling to stay out of the cellar of the AL Central, there’s been more WSI discussion on the new name for the stadium that houses the Chicago White Sox than about the South Siders’ play. The Great Guaranteed Rate Debate must be more interesting than this team is, as evidenced by the lack of a game thread for today’s game.

That’s kind of a shame, because this was one of the better recent games, with a winning result.

The Sox faced a good Seattle Mariners team with starter Anthony Ranaudo, who is handling Miguel Gonzalez’s spot while he’s on the DL. Ranaudo quickly gave up 2 runs in the 1st inning. He walked the leadoff hitter Norichika Aoki, who scored when Seth Smith doubled. Smith advanced to third on a Robinson Cano flyout and then he scored on a Nelson Cruz sac fly.

While that inauspicious beginning might have sent most of us fans in search of a bag to put over our heads, our team answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st -- mostly constructed from a series of singles to right field. Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia each singled to right to score 2 runs, and Dionner Navarro’s sac fly scored Abreu, giving the Sox a 3-2 lead.

But Seattle tied the game in the 4th with a Cano leadoff homer, and Ranaudo could not escape unscathed the third time through the Mariners’ order. In the 6th inning, Ranaudo gave up 3 more runs before exiting after one out.

The Mariners hung on to that 6-3 lead until the 7th, when Paxton exited the game for Arquimedes Caminero. Adam Eaton walked. Tim Anderson hit a ground rule double over the center field wall, scoring Eaton. Another pitching change for the Mariners, and Todd Frazier, who had struck out 3 times against Paxton, found sidearmer Steve Cishek much more to his liking. He ripped a single to left, scoring Eaton and Anderson to tie the game.

The Sox bullpen of Dan Jennings, Matt Albers, Nate Jones, and David Robertson held down the fort, and the game remained tied until the bottom of the 9th. Eaton started off with a single, followed by a successful bunt by Anderson. With first base open, the Mariners elected to walk Jose Abreu (2/3 today with an RBI). Grrrr. But never fear – Todd Frazier pulled his cape out of the mothballs and came to the rescue, slicing a single down the third base line that allowed Eaton to score. Now THAT’s a White Sox winner!

The Sox face the Mariners again tomorrow at 7:10; Chris Sale faces Felix Hernandez.

WSI's That's All, Folks:  Sox fans could use a little more superhero magic for the rest of the season.
