Bizarro World

July 24 vs Detroit Tigers

Toon Squad Update:
Bizarro
Strange days have found us

Short Take: Strange days have tracked us down.

The White Sox have destroyed our casual joys with bizarre happenings in the last twenty-four hours. Yet, in the span of four hours today, the White Sox swept a double header from the Tigers in walk-off fashion twice. In the continuation of last night's suspended tie game, the Sox won 4-3. In the 9th inning of today's blown save by David Robertson, the Sox won 5-4.

Yesterday started out with one of the weirdest days in White Sox history. This is a franchise that has both thrown a World Series, and set its center field on fire after detonating disco records with high explosives. Chris Sale, refusing to wear the Bill Veeck 1976 pajama top jersey, apparently took scissors to fabric and destroyed the throwback uniforms while his teammates were taking batting practice. For his efforts, he was sent home and suspended five games. Matt Albers took the Saturday start. Two rain delays later, Saturday ended in a 3-3 tie.

Today, the game picked up in the top of the 9th. David Robertson threw a scoreless inning, even with surrendering a two-out double. In the bottom of the 9th, Avi Garcia beat out an infield single and stole second. Two outs later, Adam Eaton drove him in from third with a single to left. This made Robertson the first game winner.

The regularly scheduled Sunday game started out all Sox. Jose Quintana was brilliant over 7 innings, striking out 4 while walking only 1 and allowing only 3 hits. The Sox struck first in the 1st inning. Adam Eaton and Tim Anderson both singled, but Melky Cabrera grounded into a double play. Jose Abreu came to the rescue, driving in Eaton with an RBI single to right.

In the Sox 2nd, Dioner Navarro and JB Shuck both singled. With two outs, Eaton smashed an Anibel Sanchez pitch into the Tigers bullpen, and the Sox led 4-0. Not much happened in the middle innings. Quintana stayed sharp, and Sanchez settled down. But Quintana ran up his pitch count to 117, and needed help in the 8th and 9th. He got help in neither.

Nate Jones gave up a home run to Andrew Romine in the top of the 8th. Robertson gave up home runs to Nick Castellanos, Tyler Collins, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the top of the 9th. The last two homers came on 1-2 counts with two out.

The Sox, however, did not quit. Eaton patiently waited out Tigers reliever Bruce Rondon for a dreaded leadoff walk. Tim Anderson executed a perfect sacrifice bunt and advanced Eaton to second. On the very next pitch, Melky Cabrera atoned for his 1st inning double play grounder by lacing a single to left, driving in the winning run. This made Robertson the second game winner.

The Sox host their crosstown rivals Monday night. Miguel Gonzalez faces Cubs ace Jake Arrieta. Sox coverage will be on Comcast Sports Net, and Cubs coverage will be on ABC7 WLS at 7:10 pm.
