Comeback Too Late

June 26 vs. N.Y. Yankees

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Major League: Back to the Minors
The film is awful and so were the Sox for most of this one.

Short Take:   Four runs in the ninth are unable to erase a pair earlier of 3-spots by the Yankees.

The timing for the New York Yankees' yearly trip to Guaranteed Rate Field couldn't have come at a worse time for the White Sox. The Bronx Bombers are once again resembling the teams of Ruth and Gehrig while the Sox have been descending into the abyss many felt they would head towards much sooner. Alas, the schedule doesn't care who's been doing what lately. All that matters is the Sox lost a 6-5 decision that became close thanks to a surge that didn't happen soon enough.

We'll get to that incomplete comeback in a bit, but first, it's worth mentioning Todd Frazier gave the Sox a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a leadoff home run. That was all rookie Jordan Montgomery gave up though. In seven innings of five-hit ball, he struck out eight. This included a stretch in which he fanned five of six Sox hitters, so it would have been difficult to get anything going no matter what happened.

What happened was the Yankees tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Austin and an RBI single by Chase Headley. Gary Sanchez, who scored the go-ahead run, wouldn't even have reached base if Frazier hadn't made an error. A classic case of the Toddfather giveth, the Toddfather taketh away. David Holmberg was probably seething on the inside that an unearned run crossed the plate.

After giving up a solo shot to Austin in the sixth, Holmberg hurt his cause more by making his own error and was relieved by Juan Minaya, just up from Triple-A, after serving up a Headley double. Austin Romine hit a sacrifice to score one run and another came across when Matt Davidson failed to hold onto a throw from Tim Anderson. This was just bad, bad baseball on display for the crowd of 20,339.

The fans remaining in the ninth got a treat when Anderson took Chasen Shreve deep for a three-run blast after back-to-back singles from Kevan Smith and Adam Engel. Even when Joe Girardi brought in Aroldis Chapman to pitch in what had become a save situation, Ricky's boys didn't quit. Melky Cabrera singled and then scored on a Jose Abreu double. The Yankees' lead had dwindled to one, but was safe for good after an Avisail Garcia groundout and a flyout from Frazier.

Though the game certainly had an exciting ending, it didn't erase all the sloppy play the Sox displayed earlier. The offense was quiet again, the defense continued to resemble that of a tee-ball team and another starter failed to go six innings. It's no wonder this group has lost seven of eight on its way to earning the worst record in the American League. The worst is probably still to come too.

If anyone can be bothered to watch the reeling Sox on Tuesday, they can do it starting at 7:10. Jose Quintana will be on the hill against Luis Severino. The alleged best pitcher in the rotation has actually been pitching like it lately, allowing only two runs in 13 2/3 innings over his past two starts. Maybe a third one will be just as lucky and with run support to boot.

Come on, Sox. Why do you have to stink up the joint only to tease us at the end?
