Tigers Fumble, Punt Game to White Sox

August 31 vs Detroit Tigers

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Lots of new crops expected to sprout...the question is, can we keep them alive?

Short Take: Sox score 5 runs off Detroit mishaps, Quintana suppresses Tigers for 6-2 win and series split.

I'll bet when you read that headline, you thought this TBGR would be full of football puns, didn't you? Let me assure you that my knowledge of football has been exhausted with that headline, and thou shalt not suffer through any more bad football analogies.

On this sultry last day of August, as the 2014 White Sox continued their slow fade into the sunset, the trade winds picked up speed around the Cell. Before the game, it was announced that Adam Dunn was traded to the Oakland As for a minor league pitcher. This was preceded by yesterday's trade of Alejandro De Aza to Baltimore. I heard a rumor that a group of WSI members packed bags for both players, and they may also have driven one or both to O'Hare Airport...in a limo. With champagne.

So today's game began with several regular players gone, and several new faces in the dugout. AAA callup Andy Wilkins started at 1st base in his MLB debut, and reliver Scott Snodgress also joined the team but did not pitch today.

After taking 2 of 3 games from the White Sox, today Detroit did not look like a team that is battling for the AL Central title with the Royals. Tigers starter Rick Porcello must have pissed off his teammates at dinner last night, because today they were absolutely no help defensively. The Sox's 5-0 lead after two innings mostly can be attributed to Detroit defensive gaffs, even without the hobbled Miguel Cabrera in the lineup.

In the 1st inning, Adam Eaton's leadoff fly ball bounced off left fielder JD Martinez' glove for a double. Eaton later scored on a Conor Gillapsie single. Then the Sox scored again when they actually – wait for it – won a replay review! Dayan Viciedo's grounder was bobbled by shortstop Eugenio Suarez, who picked it up and tossed to 2nd base. The umpire called Gillapsie out at 2nd, but Sox skipper Robin Ventura challenged the call, and it was actually overturned! Thus the Sox chalked up their second run of the inning.

The Sox scored 3 more the very next inning – 2 runs courtesy of Tigers fielding errors. A total of 4 Tiger errors (and should probably have been 5) pretty much handed Sox starter Jose Quintana an early, comfortable lead to work with.

Detroit tried to peck away at that lead, scoring 2 in the top of the 6th with back-to-back doubles and a single. But that's all the Tigers were able to muster against Quintana. Jose threw 7 innings with 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts.

In the 6th, the Sox added on when Avisail Garcia doubled and scored Carlos Sanchez, and the score was 6-2 Sox. And so it remained, even though the Sox bullpen came into play for the 8th and 9th innings. Zach Putnam pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning, and in the 9th, Jake Petricka made short work of three Tigers hitters who looked tired.

Of note:

  • Andy Wilkins's major league debut included 3 strikeouts, but he also nearly tallied his first major league home run.
  • Nice game by Adam Eaton, who was 2/5 with a double and who also had a long one nabbed by Hunter. Eaton also made several nice defensive plays, including a nice catch in short center field and doubled off Hunter. Payback!

Sox head to Minnesota to face the Twins on Tuesday at 7 pm CST in the battle of the ALC cellar-dwellers.

WSI's
The Futures Market:
Wilkins looked a little wobbly, but he's got room for growth. Look for more Futures players in September.
