Lies, Damned Lies, and Bud

Well Sox fans, it looks like Bud is trying to look like Mr. Nice Guy on the labor front, by guaranteeing that there will not be a player lock-out by the owners this season, or by reading between the lines he is saying, blame a work stoppage on the players, not the owners. He is also setting the stage to attempt a large change on the game immediately following the World Series, in a tactic similar to what the NBA did in 1998, and why not, MLBís legal counsel team has Howard Ganz on it, the same outside counsel to the NBA at the time of their lockout. Donald Fehr and the players union have made no pledge not to strike, and based on history, they wonít, but he has commented that Budís pledge is an indication of the leagues intentions to make sweeping changes after the season. At this point I donít know what Budís true intentions are, or why the owners let him stay in power for that matter, his track record of late is rather craptacular. He managed to force out Paul Beeston as MLB president, to replace him with his mouthpiece lawyer, he has drawn the wrath of Capitol Hill for his ill-conceived and self serving plan for contraction, and then committed perjury trying to defend it, He has gone out of his way to bring up points like the 60/40 rule, for no reason other than to act tough to the MLBPA, and yet the owners are content to leave him in power. Does anyone really think that there wonít be a work stoppage while Bud is the captain of this ship of foolís?†

A Vote of Confidence for Sox Pitching

The Sox opening day rotation has most fans casting a vote of no confidence, I am in a serious minority by thinking that Buerhle, Ritchie, Garland, Wright, and Rauch will be able to get the job done, though this rotation will probably only last a month or so, Jerry Manuel will put Parque back in the rotation as soon as his rehab assignment is over, whether he needs to or not. I would rather see Parque in the long relief role, which would better utilize his strengths, but I am not an MLB manager, and I donít play one on T.V. In a questionable move Kenny Williams traded pitching prospect Matt Guerrier, to the Pittsburgh Pirates for LHP Damaso Marte, and infielder Edwin Yan. Yes the bullpen needed another lefty besides Kelly Wunsch, who is recovering from surgery, and a middle infield prospect with speed is a plus, but giving up a top prospect for that is a bit of a stretch by just about anyoneís standard. This move would make a little more sense if Marte was twenty four instead of twenty seven years old, and even that is a question mark these days with Dominican players, suffice it to say that Kennyís critics will be calling for his head on a platter yet again.†

Roster Roulette

The acquisition of Marte will pretty much assure that the Sox carry 12 pitchers on the twenty five man roster, and will probably result in Mike Porzio, LHP, will get sent down to Charlotte, despite being one of the few effective pitchers on the squad this spring. There is also the question of what happens to Josh Paul, who will be waived if he does not make the 25 man roster, as he is out of options. The only other possibility would be to trade him for whatever can be gotten in return, the league is weak at the catcher position for the most part, and I believe he would be worth something. The only other scenario would be Sandy Alomar starting the season on the DL, but that just buys time, it doesnít solve the problem. For some reason I think Paul makes the twenty five man roster, as insurance against Alomarís notorious bad knees as much as any other reason. Paul making the roster would mean that Willie Harrisí fine spring effort will be rewarded with a plane ticket to Charlotte, perhaps they will fly him first class as a reward for the effort. As far as roster decisions go, why was Brian Simmons claimed off waivers only to turn around and waive him three weeks later? I donít think he was brought into camp to provide competition for the outfield position, positions that were pretty much set before spring training even began. I think perhaps this was a gamble that failed, as Simmons is still not 100 % from his injury last season.†

Spring, Baseball, and Fishing, too!

As of this writing real baseball starts in less than a week, and I for one have the same optimism I have going into every season, that the Sox can be a contender until they are mathematically out of the race. You can call it dreaming, or seeing the world through rose colored glasses, or any other clichť you choose, but I call it being a fan. Yes this team has made some bad decisions this off-season, yes they have gambled and lost in the past couple of seasons, but winning and losing is not determined by who was traded and who wasnít, it is determined by the nine guys that take the field for each game. You donít need the highest paid guy in the league at every position to be a winner, it helps, but it isnít necessary, you need nine guys that are going to play as a team to take the field and play the best they can play, Iíll take my chances with that. To quote Chris Berman, ďThatís why they play the gamesĒ.

†Time to get the boat ready for spring, it will soon be opening day for fishing season too.
