Brave New World for Sox Fans

by George Bova

We were never cursed. That was for other self-promoting fans.

We never reveled in losing. That was for self-important fans.

We suffered and nobody ever took much notice, and when they did they were as likely to heap scorn upon us as easily as praise... our public persona created from a tattooed defendant set free (again) by the lenient judge... and the criminal isn't even a baseball fan.

Our team lost and lost and lost... and through whatever strange twist of fate made us a Sox Fan in the first place, we saw it through. Year after year... screw up after screw up... a seemingly dwindling band of Chicago's contrarian baseball fans unwilling to succumb to what everyone around us willingly embraced: mediocrity.

Losing wasn't cute... not to Sox Fans.

Throwing back home run balls wasn't clever... not unless your aim was good enough to hit Jaime Navarro in the head with the gopher ball he just served up.

And as for the roof tops, the old-time scoreboard, the ivy, the beer, the blondes, and the sunshine... they throw better parties in New Orleans. The truth hurts, Chicago. Deal with it.

None of us knew -- until just now -- that we would ever live to see the goal that made us Sox Fans in the first place: winning Chicago's baseball championship. After 88 years the waiting is finally over. More championships might follow, and we certainly want as many as we can cart off, but there is the inevitable hangover after achieving the ultimate baseball goal that for most of us was the only baseball goal worth having, the world championship.

And now we've got it, Sox Fans. God Bless these 2005 White Sox. They are champions! And for all the waiting, all the futility, all the living and dying we've suffered, we Sox Fans share a small slice of the glory.

And now the ultimate question: What to do next? It's a tough one to answer. It's a Brave New World for Sox Fans.

Yankee fans deal with no such problem. They expect to win and only scratch their heads when they don't. Boston fans expect to lose to the Yankees and having finally overcome their life-long nemesis, shrug their shoulders and say, "Well, there is always last year!"

Cubs fans simply pout and talk about attendance. We Sox Fans can grin and be amused to know some things will never change. Even in the Brave New World, Cubs fans are still losers.

And as for the rest of baseball fandom, they can't possibly relate because none of them have suffered even half as long losing as we Sox Fans. Perhaps we can offer a bit of sympathy towards fans in Houston and Cleveland for they came the closest without reaching their goal. Let us know when you reach your eighth straight decade of futility. We Sox Fans will send you flowers.

This Brave New World of being world champions is definitely confusing for Sox Fans. Fortunately we have a whole year ahead of us to figure it out.

Stay tuned... 2006 is special, too.
