WSI's FLYINGSOCK.COM.  Chicago White Sox coverage with totally biased attitude!

Canadian Loonies!

Closing ranks with the incompetent Gord Ash

by George Bova

We've been publishing White Sox Interactive for over two years.  Our one editorial policy has been to serve the wants and needs of Sox FANS.  "Totally biased, utter petty, completely unobjective" has made WSI wildly popular with like-minded Sox Fans who finally find a public voice the mainstream media denies them.  We Sox Fans joke how ours isn't America's Team or even Chicago's Team--always playing second fiddle to the Lovable Losers and their legions of tourist pilgrims.  We are a proud but very unmistakable minority.

So it's with great amusement that we read the headlines and news stories coming from the Canadian press in the aftermath of baseball commissioner Bud Selig's final ruling over the Shouldergate soap opera.  Here our Sox struggle to get favorable press clippings while winning division championships, and an incompetent goof like Blue Jays GM Gord Ash is all but put up for sainthood by the pan-Canadian press.  It's been like this for weeks in the Great White North.

This begs the question, if Canada's patron saint were Gord Ash, would he be the saint of lost causes or the infirmed?  Maybe he could be both?

It's an amazing thing to behold.  After weeks of slavishly printing the innuendo and flat accusations of Gord Ash, the Canadian media was finally faced with the cold reality of just how flimsy the entire Blue Jays case has been--a clean sweep by the Sox in Selig's ruling.  The 14-page letter from the commissioner repeatedly mentioning the same caveat emptor concept expounded upon by White Sox Interactive weeks earlier!  Selig even went out of his way to sound a warning to any future GM's who might be tempted to try a similar trick to Gord Ash's.

Selig wrote, "I hope that all Club executives will take from this dispute a renewed awareness of their obligations under the caveat emptor rule.... It is my wish and expectation that disputes such as this will be rare and that Clubs will continue to deal with each other in trade matters in a forthright and professional manner."

Ouch!  That statement should have been enough to make Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey's skin crawl.

So confronted with all of this, how does Canada's press react?  Like lap dogs, of course.

This is CANADA'S team.  Now we understand the pull Gord Ash's "code of honor" pontifications had on these feeble-minded journalists.  The entire English-speaking portion of the country (or at least the small portion that actually bothers to follow baseball) has been insulted.  Wasn't Gord wronged by Kenny Williams?  Hadn't the Blue Jays laid out an airtight case for compensation, a perfectly reasonable request given what the Sox had dealt to Toronto?

Well, in a word, "no," the Blue Jays case was pathetically weak.  Had the Canadian media spent any time asking the tough questions of Ash rather than simply swallowing the hyperbole, they wouldn't have been so surprised.  Why didn't Gord make the trade conditional?  Why wasn't a more thorough physical examination done on Sirotka on the first occasion?  How many previous health examinations has team doctor Steve Mirabello screwed up?

"For someone to suggest we didn't do our job is a dangerous accusation," whined Ash.

Too bad nobody in Canada thought to ask before.
