Donn Pall BP All-Star!

Former Sox and Sox Fan gets the nod from Sox!

In The News...

One of the things that I and Sox fans of my generation have been complaining about is the lack of an "old timers" game for the Sox franchise.

When I was a kid that was a staple and something that everyone looked forward to, in large part because no matter how bad the current team was, you could always think back to better times and better days when you saw your heroes return to Comiskey Park.

Naturally Rob Gallas and his minions have abandoned this concept which was usually a three inning game before the regularly scheduled contest. The last time the Sox had an "old timers" game that I know of was right before the 1983 All Star Game when some of the greatest players in history returned to the diamond at least to doff the cap and say hello to the fans. Among the stars who showed up for that game were Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson, Billy Williams, Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio and Carl Hubbell. Representing the Sox were Luis Aparicio and Early Wynn.

Part of the "mystique" of the New York Yankees is the reverence with which they honor their past. Old Timers Day at Yankee Stadium is a yearly event which has taken on a life of itís own. I can even recall the Cubs hosting such an event in the early 90's. I especially remember Dick Allen drilling a shot into the left field bleachers off of Ferguson Jenkins.

While the Sox have abandoned their past at least one minor league team is embracing what is Chicago baseball. The Joliet Jackhammers are having an Old Timers Chicago Game on August 2nd starting at 7:05 Chicago time.

It might be well worth your time to drive out and take in the festivities. As of this writing the former Chicago players scheduled to attend include Danny Pasqua (White Sox 1988 - 1994), Dave Kingman, Tim Raines ( 1991 - 1995), Jay Johnstone (1971 - 1972), Greg Luzinski (1981 - 1984), Donn Pall (1988 - 1993), Bobby Thigpen (1986 - 1993), Scotty Fletcher ( 1983 - 1985, 1989 - 1991), Jack McDowell ( 1987 - 1988, 1990 - 1994), Keith Moreland, Bob Dernier, Lee Smith and Jenkins.

The players will be available before the game to meet and mingle with the fans and in the wake of the serious accident that almost took Bobby Thigpenís life, it would be a great gesture from Sox fans to say hello and let him know heís not forgotten.

Itís In The "Stars..."

Also with the All Star Game coming up in mid July, former Sox pitcher and friend of WSI, Donn Pall has been slated for an unusual honor.

Pall was contacted by Major League Baseball and asked if he could pitch some batting practice. However itís not to the All Stars themselves but to some corporate sponsors!

Donn told me that MLB wants to give their biggest sponsors a real taste of what playing the game at the highest level is all about and are going to let them see what itís like to face "live" pitching. Thatís where Donn comes in as heíll be back on the mound firing away at CEOís and marketing directors.

I told Donn he should "announce his presence" a la "Nuke" LaLoosh by hitting the first overweight CEO in the rear end with a pitch!
