Step back from the ledge?

Well Sox fans, everyone is calling for heads to roll after a seven game losing streak, and in a way they did. Royce Clayton, the hitless wonder, has been benched indefinitely, leaving Tony Graffanino to play SS till further notice. This makes many think that Joe Crede will get the call up soon, but I seriously doubt that will happen, unless there is a player placed on the DL, this team cannot afford to lose a pitcher for a position player at this point, even though the pitching has been improving slightly. Does Gary Glover belong in the rotation? No, but he has to be there till Rocky Biddle is ready to take his place, Rocky will eventually be the third starter in the Sox rotation, the only thing holding him back is the healing process, and I donít want to start a new attack on the current state of the Sox pitching, because others have done it for me, why they allowed Tommy John to bolt to accept a job with the Expos is beyond me, I blame Kenny Williams for that. Nardi Contreas has managed to ruin the arms of six first round draft picks, though one of them , via trade, has managed some success, Kip Wells is pitching well for the Pittsburgh Pirates. If this is not a sign of Nardiís ineptitude what is? How long will it take for the Sox to realize that it is time to cut bait and make a move?

Fire Manuel?

The cries for Jerry Manuelís head on a plate make me wonder if Sox fans remember Terry Bevington, I think Jerry is getting a lot of flack out of frustration of the fact that the players are not performing, the Sox allowed forty eight runs in their seven game losing streak, last time I checked the manager is in the dugout for both halves of the inning, so you are saying that the manager is responsible for how the players are playing? Last time I checked the manager neither hits or fields, yet the fans want to blame him for how the players are performing, no one ever wants to blame the players when this happens. Jerry has tried shaking up the line-up, it worked for a few days and then Magglio Ordonez and Paul Konerko went into slumps, how can you blame Jerry for that? He is not the one sitting at the plate getting made a fool of, blame who you want but the manager is not playing in the game. The players play the game, and lately they have not played well, but it is not because of Jerry Manuel, this team played over their head for him last year when they weíre riddled with injuries and still finished over .500, expect no less now, actually you can expect more, and it will come.

Sox Draft News

The draft is going on and in a weak draft to begin with some of the decisions the Sox made are even weaker in my opinion, taking a college relief pitcher that projects to be a relief pitcher/closer in the big leagues with the 18th pick simply baffles me. Combine that with not addressing the organizations most glaring weakness, catching, until the 18th round is also confusing. I am not a big league scout, and I didnít stay in a Holiday Express last night, but I will comment that I would have done things a little differently. I think the most obvious things that comes out of this draft is teams drafting not based on talent, but on signability, and this is not just the Sox, the Pirates by-passed the #1 prospect of the draft because they felt they wouldnít be able to sign him. Guys like Scott Boras and other agents are going to drive this too the point that none of the top prospects will get signed or even drafted. Matt Harrington is a prime example of this, he was drafted for the third time this year, twice before he was a top 100 pick, this time around he was picked 364th overall, by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, a team that is unlikely to sign him because of his demands for better than first round money.

Here is the playerís drafted one through twenty two by the Sox:

1. Royce Ring, lhp, San Diego State U.
2. Jeremy Reed, of, Long Beach State U.
3. Josh Rupe, rhp, Louisburg (N.C.) JC.
