Enquiring Sox Fans want to know!

If only Sox Fans knew...
Last Series vs. Boston
  • Remember way back in May?  Yeah, that's the last time these two hooked up.  It was between May 20-22.
  • The White Sox took two of three from Boston, however were outscored by Boston, 12-10.
Totally Biased Sox Notes
  • The White Sox actually have a winning record against the A.L. East this year (16-13).
  • Jon Garland's last start against Boston was during the last series against Boston (May 22nd), and I'm sure we all remember it.  Garland pitched 8 solid innings, giving up 3 hits (2 of them in the bottom of the ninth), no walks, and striking out 4.  He also allowed no runs as the Sox defeated Boston, 2-0.
  • As a starter in 2002, Rocky Biddle has been very effective.  He has started 6 games thus far, and while his record is only 1-2, he has an ERA of 3.77 in 28.2 innings, in which he has allowed 24 hits, 14 runs (12 earned), 14 walks, and 24 strike outs.
  • As for the offense, this is the fourth straight year that Magglio Ordonez will hit over .300, hit 30 homers and drive in 100 runs.  Also, fellow outfielder Aaron Rowand has been hitting .284 as a starting center fielder thus far in 2002.
Know thy Enemy!
  • When you think about the 2002 Red Sox, one word should come to mind...  PITCHING.  The Red Sox are currently third in the American League with a 3.76 team ERA.  They only trail Oakland and Anaheim, who have both recently overtaken the Red Sox.  The Red Sox have also allowed the third least amount of runs in the AL (again, behind only Oakland and Anaheim).
  • Staying with the pitching motif, the Red Sox also have the lethal 1-2 punch of Derek Lowe and Pedro Martinez, who also are 1-2 in the American League in individual ERA.  Martinez leads the league with a 2.26 ERA (50 ER, 199.1 IP) and Lowe is second with a 2.45 ERA (58 ER, 212.2 IP).  Oakland's Barry Zito is the only other pitcher in the American League with an ERA under 3 (2.74).
  • There's more to the Red Sox than just pitching, however.  Boston's Manny Ramirez leads the American League in batting, as he and Kansas City's Mike Sweeney are in a tight race for the crown.  Ramirez is batting .346, Sweeney .345.  Also, No-Mah is 7th in the A.L. with a  .314 batting average and Cliff Floyd has been hitting .327 (in 41 games) since joining Boston.
  • You'd never know it by the media hype around him, but Boston's Nomar Garciaparra leads all American League shortstops with 24 errors.  Maybe they should get Royce Clayton to shore up the middle infield defense.
What to watch for!
  • BOB HOWRY!
  • A fierce showdown between the Red Sox (tied for 2nd in the AL Wild Card Race) and the White Sox (4th in the AL Wild Card Race).
  • Can we bank on tinkering?  Oh yeah.
  • Who knows?  It's the Sox!
