Running through Gloom!
A glorious 2005 season is nearly over, but the focus in many quarters remains negative and gloomy. WSI's Guy Bacci wonders how so many can make a bad situation worse -- including several inside the Sox organization. Will playoff baseball finally make the sun shine through?
Down the stretch!
The pressure shifts daily as the Sox enter a last-week playoff chase for the first time since 1967! WSI's Hal Vickery is one more Sox Fan making plans and keeping his eyes on the prize!
September 22... Pathetic
Brandon McCarthy goes toe-to-toe with Johan Santana, but Sox strand runners in scoring position in 8th, 9th, and 10th innings en route to embarrassing 4-1, 11-inning loss and 1 1/2 game division lead.
September 19... Offense rallies, Bullpen blows
Indians jump to 4-0 lead on Freddy Garcia, Sox offense rallies for 5-4 lead, Cleveland scores final three runs of game in 8th and 9th innings to take series opener, 7-5.
The task of cooling off Cleveland falls to the Sox, and the outcome decides each team's fate. The Sox have owned Cleveland along with everyone else in the division this side of Minnenoplace, but that's small comfort to fretful Sox Fans notes WSI's Hal Vickery.
The Sox get an early start on playoff season with BIG GAMES against Cleveland! WSI's Guy Bacci considers the pluses and minuses leading to this point, the games that ultimately decide the fate of the 2005 season!
Cubune cries over Sox Success!
If the Sox are in the home stretch of a six-month quest to win the Central Division title, then obviously the Cubune's headlines must be about attendance, TV ratings, and losing streaks. It's all too predictable, the media's ignorance of the Sox, but especially the Cubune's negative spin. WSI's Hal Vickery takes these Unlovable Losers working at Cubune Tower to the woodshed once again!
September 9...See-Saw Nail-Biter
In a see-saw match between two divisional leaders, the team who can't decide where they even play came away with a 6-5 victory over our beloved Palehose. The biggest silver-lining from the game: Bobby Jenks went three full innings, fanning six in the process!
September 7... Konerko-Contreras 1, Royals 0
Though not as sharp as previous few starts, Jose Contreras mows down Kansas City for 7+ innings, needing only a solo home run from Paul Konerko to secure Sox's 7th straigh win.
September 5... McCarthy plows through Red Sox nation!
The Sox continue to dominate in September, Brandon McCarthy, again, shuts down a high power team and the Sox score every which way over the Red Sox!
MacPhail & The Big Lie!
If you tell a lie often enough, people begin to believe it. Nobody knows it like the folks running the Urinal, an entire baseball empire built one fiction on top of another successfully fooling pilgrim idiots far and wide -- but especially the busloads traveling from Des Moines. WSI's Hal Vickery caught the Flubbie president trying to spread an old lie about Sox Park and he is having none of it!
September 4th...Chicago Decimates Detroit Offense
Scott Podesdnik, Tadahito Iguchi, and Paul Konerko pump up the Sox offense, while Jon Garland gets his 17th win in convincing fashion leading the Chicago White Sox to a 2-0 victory and a 4-game sweep of the hapless Detroit Tigers.
September 1... Starting September Right
Sox open series with complete domination of toothless Detroit Tigers. Jose Contreras looks good on hill, while A.J. Pierzynski leads offense to 12-3 pounding of Detroit.
