Josh Paul does it all!
(August 29)
Short take: Glover earns fourth
win!
Three games over .500. It's such a simple thing and a minor
accomplishment, yet Sox Fans feel like they've lived through a war just to get
here. Three games over .500 is the highwater mark of the entire 2001 Sox
season so cut us some slack for being a bit celebratory. A three-run
blast by improbable slugger Josh Paul leads the Sox to an 8-3 victory
at Detroit.
It's always nice beating Phil Garner's team.
Gary Glover seems to be settling into his new starter's role just
fine. Clearly the best acquisition of Kenny Williams' first year
as GM, the guy we got for Scott Eyre pitched six innings allowing just
five hits and two earned runs. He recovered neatly from an unearned run
caused by Carlos Lee dropping a pop up to the first Detroit
batter.
Glover hadn't a thing to worry about because Josh Paul had
everything in hand! The most unlikely of power threats, Paul drilled a
330 foot shot high off the wall along Comerica Park's right field fair
pole. Fortunately a fan reached out and caught the ball allowing Mr.
Versatile to circle the basepaths behind two Sox teammates. The Sox had
the lead and wouldn't look back.
Mighty Josh wasn't done yet. He went 4 for 5 at the plate, got an rbi
double and batted in half of the Sox's runs all by his lonesome self. He
stole a base and, Hey!--not even a passed ball behind the plate! The man
can do it all!!!
Besides Paul, Sox heroics came from the Sox bullpen. Kip Wells,
Alan Embree, and Keith Foulke each pitched scoreless
innings. Sure there were a couple of long flyballs, but that's okay at
Comerica Park!
This has to be a first for the season: the Sox successfully stole
three bases. First base coach Gary Pettis ought to sleep better tonight.
Are the Sox serious about pushing Cleveland for the division title?
Sweep Detroit on Thursday and go to work on that pathetic Tribe pitching
staff.
Keep winning!
