Kipper Melts
(August 2)
Short take: 6-run third dooms Sox
What's wrong with Kip Wells? Maybe he was hurt worst than anyone
realized after getting hit by a pitch, but his recent outing have looked
suspiciously like the timid Kip Wells Sox Fans came to know and loathe in
2000. A six-run meltdown in the third inning dooms the Sox, 6-3 losers
to Kansas City. We just lost 2 of 3 to these punks. Pathetic.
The whole game revolved around the third inning. The lowly Royals
batted around on the Sox en route to scoring six runs. It was 4-0 and Kip
Wells was chased before the Sox managed to get the first out! Matt
Ginter did an admirable job in relief, went five full innings allowing
just three hits and one run.
Meanwhile Sox bats were in a deep slumber. It wasn't until the
seventh inning that they finally got it in gear, Jeff Liefer leading
off the inning with a solo dinger. Jose Valentin clubbed a
two-run shot and the deficit was cut in half, 6-3.
That was the last of the rallies. The Sox #3-#5 hitters (Magglio
Ordonez, Jose Canseco, and Paul Konerko) were a combined 0
for 12 with 3 K's. The Sox left seven runners on base.
